Chiang mai, great place to do nothing

    What shall we do today?(yesterday)
A semi regular cafe customer recently remarked on a common question from friends back 'home', "so, what do you do all day in Chiang Mai?" We agreed that often the answer is that you are busy doing nothing.
Chiang Mai is a place where you can be as busy as you like or a wonderfully relaxing place to do nothing.
after running around market shopping, booking flights, etc., Boon and I decided to take some time out to do Nothing.
so we went to one of our favourite places for a quiet sit with a coffee, Kad Suan Kao, Central Shopping Plaza.
In the centre of the Plaza is a grassed openair haven and next to tyhe 1st floor exit to this haven is a food and drink stall where we got ice coffee for 15 baht each and went out to sit at a table on the terrace overlooking the grassed area.

    We had our usual bickering session on the way;
    'wear your helmet'
'dont put it on now, pull over first'

    and when we arrived

    'I want a Riubics cube'
    "did you bring any money?'
'i need a notebook for my website work'
'i've got loads of notebooks at home'
'but we're not at home now are we.'

So Ive got my notebook, which i used immediately to jot this down on, and Boon has just got back from a fruitless second hand book search, to tell me that i smoke too much...of course hes right.

    Preparing for the family

Quite excited at the moment. Good that I've got things to be excited about, as the political situation here, added to regular quiet season, means business is not so good right now.
Reasons to be excited...well the new look on www.travel-and-life-in-thailand.co.uk for a start. Many thanks to my good friend Ally for her hard work wading through my very disorganized site files.
i've been working on photo files to assist in the reconstruction...work that will no doubt several days as im so prolific with the camera.

And then theres the family visit.
Mother, sister Theresa, Niece Joanne and Jos 2 children are due to land in Bangkok on the 22 nd and will be here for 3 weeks.
Been chatting to Mum on webcam quite abit sorting Plans.
got the promise of a good deal on a CRV hire for a week whilst they are here so me and Somboon can take them on special tours.

Somboon, by the way has been working, for some months now, at Relax and Enjoy, a mthai Massage shop in the Night Bazaar road.

And if you are reading this and considering a visit, please be aware that Chiang Mai has no problem so come on over and enjoy Thailand.

Doi Inthanon National Park and back for the Sunday market

it was lovely waking up to the peace of our lakeside bungalow near Chom Thong. determined to make the most of our last day we got on the road again by 9.30am. we headed up towards Doi Inthanon, bearing off to the left to Mae Klang Waterfall. Here there is a large parking area and food stalls , with covered dining areas next to the stream from the waterfall, before you actually enter National Park. we grabbed some breakfast there. but then headed back round to the Doi Inthanon National Park entrance and paid , once again 200 baht for me, 40 baht for Boon. This allows you access to anywhere in the Park apart from the summit and Temple, full access costs 400 baht.
we were basically on the waterfall hunt and and got to see to spectacular falls....Siriphon and Wararaitcha, hope i've got those names right.
The first, Siriphon was a look only one, with no access to the water, just a viewing platform.
Wararaitcha, was even more spectacular and you could find a spot to sit at the watersedge at the bottom of the waterfall, a little downstream, and even take a dip if you were brave or stupid enough to endure the cold water and strong currents. Of course we are very stupid and went in to cool off, great fun!
But after the stunning beauty of it all , what we realy wanted was to chill out for a while and get some prolonged water play somewhere a little less intimidating. and for that it was back down to Mae Klang where we spent a very nice afternoon, much of it in the water , along with many many thai and a few other farang.
we left there at 5pm and were back at the cafe for the sunday market by 6.30pm.

nearly finished the Mae Hong Song Loop

saturday..nearly done the Mae Hong Song Loop.

spent alot of time sleeping yesterday and my stomach still felt pretty rough this morning. still , determined to get the most out of this holiday we got on the road by around 10am and after picking up more imodium, headed off to Obluang. the roads were alot easier and the views much less spectacular. until we reached Obluang at around midday.
it was 200 baht for me on entry, 40 baht for Boon. it is a visually stunning place and i may well go back for a camping holiday in the future. unfortunately the resort right at the entrance is apparently no loger operating. so after spending time relaxing in the beauty of the park next to the mountain river, we headed off again in search of our next place to stay. The road on from Obluang follows the river for quite some way and the road is reasonably flat, making for a very pleasant journey. we considered finding a place for a swim in the river but , as lovely as it looked it also had a very obvious strong current and the complete lack of any locals swimming anywhere put me off the idea.
after checking out one resort just down from Obluang and deciding it was to dead looking, we decided to carry on to the Doi Inthanon area.
we are now booked into a quiet Thai resort 7km out of a town called Chom Tong ( i think, will correct tomorrow).
the town is pretty non-discript but does ahave a very beautiful temple, a bustling food stall area in the centre and a home where you can get Thai massage from blind practioners in the day time.

mae hong song loop day 4

    Friday, March 7, 2008

Mae Hong Song was a nice place to be for a short stay, beautiful around the lake and very quiet. wednesday night we went for food at a bar near the lake. the name of the bar escapes me but they did have a pool table and a 'Jam Spot" corner for musicians, of which we saw none. we ordered fish and chips and american fried rice and waited about 40 minutes for the fish and chips and another 20 for the american fried rice. the quality of the food was no better than the service and so as you can imagine not on any reccomendation list.
thursday morning i got up early and went for breakfast at a Thai place, diagonally opposite the 'CrossRoads' bar. They were very pleasant and the food was great, both quality and value.
went back and got Boon up and we actually on the road by around 9.30am.
what can i say, the twistiest, most spectular stretch of road yet. So many stunning views. Hard work with all the up and down of it, but well worth it.
we bumped into an italian family doing the same route on two motorcys, at a rest stop. from there we sort of stuck pretty close through the mountains to the next food stop and onto Mae Chaem.
Mae Chaem is a very quiet place with very little to speak of except a couple of resorts.
we have booked into The Pongsara resort and have a very nice large wooden raised bungalow, with fridge and tv.
we were only going to stop one night. eating at the resort and very tired from the ride we turned in early again.
unfortunately this morning i awoke to a very bad case of bad stomach along with the aftereffects of far too much sun on my head yesterday. from my sick bed i got Boon to book us in for a second night and stayed in bed till midday.
once up there was a problem with the bike to get sorted, in that the clutch cable snapped as we pulled into the resort last night. luckily there was a repair shop just down fronm the resort and they came and fixed it for 80baht.
by the time we got that sorted and i had got imodium from the local pharmacy it was nearly 4pm . we did head of in search of a waterfall but turned back after half an hour, deciding to rest for today and head off to Op Luang tomorrow morning.

    extra costs from wednesday...dinner 310 baht....drink 10..internet 17 + 30 from tuesday

    thursday costs......
    breakfast....60 baht
    fuel...290
food and drinks on the way....276
    room...500
    drinks..45
    dinner...240

day 2 of the Mae Hong Song Loop

day 2 of Mae Hong Song Loop trip.

in the end we were so worn out by the days travel that once i finished in the internet shop we returned to our room and had an early night.
i was up at around 8am this morning and after getting Boon up we left our guest house in search of breakfast before heading of to Mae Hong Song.
we selected a lovely looking place which appeared to be called Forestry 33rd.
Comments on this place...well first of all , don't go there if you are in a hurry to get anywhere, the service was extremely slow, and we were the only customers.
Also maybe an idea to spend time being very specific with your order. i ordered fried tofu with mushroom and chilli. i got fried tofu and veg but not a mushroom in sight, but that said i have to say that the food was delicious and portion wise, very good value.
we said goodbye to Pai at around 10am and headed out toward Mae Hong Song.
the roads were even more twisting than up to Pai and steeper, resulting in use of 2nd and 1st gear occassionally. made a few stops to rest the bike, catch the ever more stunning views and one food stop.
we nearly didnt get to the food stop when we came round a corner to be met by a line of traffic , stuck due to a truck load of long concrete posts having become dislodged on a hairpin, almost completely blocking the road.
luckily there was enough room for bikes to squeeze past and go under the posts that were bridging the hairpin.
shortly after passing that hazard we stopped at a motorbike workshop for a much needed oil change and then on a little further to a large rest stop with cafe stalls and a park where they have a stream and cave full of some amazing big blue fish.
after eating there and feeding the fish we finished the journey to Mae Hong Song getting here at around 4pm.
Mae Hong Song is also a beautiful place with a lake and lakeside Temple. we have a guesthouse room on the lakeside road next to the Temple, again very basic , but clean, tidy , own shower room and even tv in the room.
theres lots of food stalls round the lake so we'll probably spend time there this evening, im about to go find Boon now.
    additional costs yesterday
    snack food.... 40 baht.

    todays expenses
    coffee...20 ; breakfast ..130......bike oil change..220....lunch...240....coffee..90
guest house room.....300 ....snacks and drinks 110.

self made tour..The Mae Hong Song Loop

Self Made Tour ..The Mae Hong Song Loop

so, at long last we have our guest house license. before we open we have decided to take a much needed holiday to recharge our batteries before cracking on with the guest house.
so , after much flaffing around this morning, we finally left Chiang Mai at midday, on my JRD 150cc chopper.
it took us about an hour and a half to get onto the road to Pai, a left turn at Mae Tang. not far up that road we stopped at a nice little Thai cafe, next to a small stream, and had Kanna Muu Krop(fried kale and pork with rice, and a couple of Birdy tinned coffees. it was a lovely little spot with a cool breeze running up the stream, as good as any fan, and we sat watching several large butterflies frolicking in the sunlight that broke through the trees along the stream. we had considered renting a more powerful bike for this trip but after realizing that it would cost us about 3000 baht, changed our minds. glad about that as the road to Pai has turned out to be not so bad, steepness wise. it is how ever extremely twisty. great fun tho. we made several rest stops along the way, taking in some of the stunning mountain views.
arrived in Pai at just after 5.30pm.
Pai turns out to be a beautiful little town on a delightful river. how long it stays that way is anyones guess as tourism is here in a big way. clearly very popular with tourists of all kinds, the town is packed with guest houses, small and large riversaide resorts, eateries of every sort you could imagine, and bars , bars and more bars, a couple of which with excellent live music and even one where you can go and join in a live jam.
its still bearable right now and if i wasnt so tired from our journey right now, im sure id be out enjoying the night atmosphere some more. its got a bit of a festival feeling to it. sadly, its popularity is likely to lead to being less bearable by the year, so i'd say get here while its still fun.
after checking a couple of riverside places out and getting prices around the 5-600 baht mark for anything decent , we settled for The Tonga Guest house just off what appears to be the main Bar Street leading down to the river.
our stuff dumped in the very pleasant, clean room,(lovely ensuite shower room), that set us back 300 baht, we took a walk into town, went for pizza and more thai food at Baan Pai restaurant; more walk around, ginger tea at the Tick cafe, bought a couple of second hand books from the shop opposite The Tick and are debating whther to take a massage before bed.
    todays costs;
    fuel ....tank filled for 300baht.
food and drinks on the way ...118+95+40
    food and drinks here.....80+285+20+50
    books....... 630
    room.........300
    total...............1918

photos will be addeed when we get back.

march madness at the brick road cafe chiang mai

not sure why the title, as the madeness hasnt really started yet.
so we are into march, and hopefully we are having a holiday this week. if all goes to plan, we finally get our guest house license tomorrow. but before we open the guest house section i really need a break so boon and i are planning to hit the road tuesday, probably just for the week. i have to sort out keys for the chefs tomorrow as they will keep the cafe open and look out over it for us.
we are actually closing tomorrow but the day staff will still come in to help boon and i have a final sort out and clear out upstairs and basically ensure that the guest house is ready for opening when we get back off our holiday.
i will try to updatwe this blog daily during the trip. should be a crazy one:)

    buddha day

yesterday was Buddha Day, the day they remember when 1250 went to find the Buddha at the point of his enlightenment. we closed for the day, in respect for this day, i felt it not a day to be engaged in business.
my self and boon went for a nice day at huay tung tao.
in the evening we joined the hundreds of others at Wat Chedi Luang to pay our respects properly. it is quite awe inspiring to see the dedication in the Thai people. and watching the people circle the Chedi , their hands held in wye position, and the chanting of the Monks in the background was most moving.
unfortunately i appear to have reached my monthly photo limit so will have to add my other photos next week.

    thankyou and farewell dear friend

i saw a butterfly today, about 10 minutes after hanging remberance flowers and adding 3 roses to the hanging plant that i bought for Waa Waa yesterday.
when i showed the photo i took to the chef, she spoke of the Thai belief that when a pet dies you will see a butterlfly shortly after and that it is the spirit of the pet returning to check on its loved ones before it departs for ever.
snatched away from us at just 6 months old, on thursday 10th jan, i can only be thankful that i believe that she felt no pain, it was so quick.
i pray that the pictures of that fateful moment, that play over and over in my mind, will in time recede and be replaced with the other pictures of her playing in the park, greeting customers with her cheeky ways, waiting patiently outside my bedroom door in the morning.
thankyou Waa Waa for being in my life, farewell dear friend and may your spirit fly free like the butterfly to eternal peace.

    freetime is soooo good

a sad week for Boons family has culminated in me finally enjoying freetime.
The fact that Boon had to go off to Lao for the funeral forced me to finally put my trust in my staff, as i had much important things to do away from the cafe that could not wait for Boons return. and having done it once I now feel a new found freedom to take my freetime when i need it, and for the first time in many months went and spent time at Buak hard Park. photos coming soon:)

    a prayer for Boons Grandmother

I Never Knew You But I Owe You So Much

But for you your grandson Somboon  would not have been born,
    After a lifetime of solitude,
    Searching for my true soulmate,
    I have found,
    Somboon.
A special soul in this crazy world,
    Sometimes needy, often my rock,
    Temperamental,
    Insightful,
    Artistic,
This and more are qualities that his character comprises,
    But most of all,
His love for me and visa versa,
    Have given me strength,
    And purpose,
    And above all else ,
The will and determination to complete my path,
For this I offer you eternal gratitude.
May you rest in peace and may your path to Nippan be swift.
